The largest on the Great Lakes, this 135 foot flagpole was erected in 1993 to commemorate the 135th anniversary of the founding of Southampton. Situated on the shores of Lake Huron, the town has long been associated with beacons and this certainly qualifies as a modern day beacon. The pole is designed to withstand 100 mph gales without the flag and 60 mph gusts with the flag raised. Dominion Day is the former name of Canada Day and on July 1 we are 144 years as a nation.

This also marks my one year anniversary posting photos from around Southern Ontario.

  1. So we are the 4th and you all are the 1st. Pretty interesting. Love the maple leaf flag and your beautiful national anthem. Ours is OK, but your is beautiful. Other than the UK, it is my favorite…UK-1; Canada-2: USA-3. Love the TALL flagpole. Glad it is strong. Have a happy day tomorrow. Put out your flag, I put mine out this afternoon. Genie

  4. Something that high on something that tall must be a challenging capture. The flag is the perfect reminder of Canada Day. Hope you have a great one!!

  5. Happy Holiday — thank you for the bit of history (I am woefully ignorant) and for the beautiful picture.

  6. This is quite the flag pole. When I was there, it was too windy to have a flag flying. It somehow looks smaller than I would have expected – but then it is awfully high up!
