This mural in the east end Toronto neighbourhood of Leslieville celebrates Alexander Muir, who composed of The Maple Leaf Forever in 1867. There are many who still feel this should be our national anthem. It is said that Muir was inspired when a brilliant maple leaf fell on his jacket from a Leslieville tree. That tree is still standing today and has become a famous landmark in the community.

  1. I never seem to get out there – great mural and good story!

The linky doesn’t seem to be on the post on the Signs, Signs site.

  2. Attractive mural and you’ve captured the light and shadows perfectly.

  3. Beautiful mural and interesting history about the sign and the song. Do you feel like they spelled Leslie wrong? That it should be Lesleyville?. Thanks for Signs Signs! I’m glad I checked back just now before turning in for the night. These glitches remind us of how much work you do in hosting the meme. When nothing goes wrong we take you for granted! Thank you as always.

  4. Looks like Alexander Muir still has a fan club.

  5. That’s a beautiful mural and a great backstory.

  6. I love that mural and really loved the bit of history you gave.

  7. Hi Lesley – Thanks for putting my link in and once again thank you for doing the Signs Signs every week. I am sure it is a lot of work for you and I hope you know how much we all appreciate it!!
