Located at 23 Main Street in Grimsby, Charlie’s Barbershop was once a jewellery store with a telephone exchange in the rear when it was built in 1910. It later became a barbershop until an insurance agent moved in during the 1960s. It was purchased by a Bernard Sprenger from a Charlie Clattenberg in 1968 and then in 1983, it again became a barbershop. So says the green sign from the historical society that is on the upper left of the window. The other signs in the window advertise for other local businesses and events, including a food drive and a lasagna dinner being held in a nearby parish hall. I was tempted to show this in B&W as it looked better, but I really wanted you all to see the brightly painted pink trim.

  1. The pink trim is certainly a show stopper. 🙂

  2. That pink looks like it’s been there for a long time! It certainly caught MY eye!

  3. So wait. It NOW is a barbershop again? That pink paint is sure an eye-catcher!

  4. This is the kind of barber shop that I visit. The ones in the malls charge too much. The one I go to has one thing that Charlie’s shop does not have… a traditional barber shop pole..

  5. The pink is so unusual for a barber shop!

  6. Funny I feel a little old and fuddy-duddy, but I am surprised at pink for a barbershop. Not displeased, sort of happy about it actually, but surprised!

  7. Nice capture… Looks very nostalgic.

  8. so much history. glad it is still standing despite changing business.

  9. A pink trimmed barber shop facade must stand out in the regular streetscape! And an interesting history to it too!

  10. That is an interesting font for the name!
I wonder if that pink was originally red? because that is definitely an odd colour choice for a barbershop.

  11. It’s kind of rare to find a barber shop with a pink paint. But it is cool. How many barber shop that we can find in our hometown. At least here in my place I can say we have three but with in a distance of 20 or 25 miles apart. ^_^

  12. That is quite a shade of pink….and it looks like they do no twang anyone looking in the window because it certainly is filled with goodies. There is something really charming about this little shop. By the way, I had not noticed the triangle above the “i” in “Quiltery” until you mentioned it. When I am driving down that driveway I have one thing and only one thing on my mind….fabric. Thanks for the comments. genie

  13. I can imagine that would look good as a monochrome. A pink barber shop?

  14. I’m so taken with your blog – it’s absolutely enchanting! Subscribing now 🙂
    Have a great day!
